The Hippo Project is a community based movement to inspire all to find large and small ways to help all children overcome all obstacles to have the opportunity to thrive.

SPOT A HIPPO

If you look for hope and inspiration, you will find it. We want everyone to choose to look for the good in life in honor of Annemarie.

As unique as we always thought Anne’s love of the hippopautomus was, we’ve been heartened by random moments of spotting statues, animated characters, Christmas songs and countless other examples of hippos popping up in our life and across pop culture.

If you “Spot a Hippo” in the wild,

  1. Snap a picture

  2. Post is on Instagram and tag @thehippoproject, or

  3. Send it to us and we’ll add it to our Instagram channel and our “Hippo Gallery” on this page.

The Annemarie McInerney Scully SEPTA Awards was started in 2023 by Laura MaCleish who partnered with Annemarie as Board members of the Lynbrook chapter of SEPTA in loving memory of Anne. The Awards are designed to remember her by recognizing selfless thoughts and actions of those who go above and beyond to be inclusive to the Lynbrook special needs community. This year, the awards will be held June 2025 at Lynbrook High School.

Your donation will be used as sponsorship for the awards reception, including scholarships for award winning students.

Make your own donation. We’ve identified a number of organizations that align with our missing:

Families Struggling with Loss of a Parent(s): An estimated 1 in 14 children in America will lose a parent before the age of 18. In the first year following Annermarie’s death, her family benefited from a strong and diverse support network that came together to help the Scully family. We recognize that not every family has that level of support, which will look to provide.

Children with Special Needs: In 20212-23, 7.5 million children, the equivalent of 15% of all public school students, received special education and/or related services. 1 Annemarie was a talented and dedicated teacher, with most of her career spent as a reading specialist. She was resolute in her belief that all children could be taught to read, and her greatest joy in her professional life was teaching children who believed they would never read and showing them the way.

Teachers: According to a federal Department of Education survey, 94% of public school teachers in the United States reported paying for supplies without reimbursement, with the National Education Association reporting that 0n average, educators spend somewhere between $500 and $750 of their own money every year on supplies their students need. Annemarie knew firsthand what it was like to teach in an underserved school district, having spent her first year after college working for Teach for America in Camden, Pennsylvania.
